How to Connect to a Computer Remotely Using MSTSC

Adjusting Connection Settings

Before connecting, you can adjust various connection settings such as screen size, login information, availability of local hard drives and printers, or keyboard and sound behavior by selecting 'Show Options.' To do so, enter 'mstsc' or 'Remote Desktop Connection' in the search results and select Remote Desktop Connection.

Availability and Installation

All Student Technology Center (STC) workstations running Windows have the Remote Desktop Connection client installed. Alternatively, you can use the Remote Desktop application in IUanyWare, located in the 'Utilities' section of your web browser.

VPN Requirements

Unless you're connecting via the EWA Remote Desktop Gateway, you'll need a VPN connection if you are off campus connecting to a computer on campus or if you are on campus connecting to your home computer in campus housing. Make sure to enable this before proceeding.

Enabling Remote Desktop Inbound Rules

To enable remote desktop inbound rules in Windows Firewall:

1. Right-click each rule and choose Enable Rule.

2. Locate the following rules in the right pane: 'Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security' or 'Windows Firewall.'

3. Search for Windows Firewall, and select to open it.

Finding Your Host Computer's Machine Name

To find your host computer's machine name:

1. On the machine to which you are connecting, select the Windows search icon (the magnifying glass next to the Windows icon).

2. Type 'PC name' in the search bar, and then select View your PC name.

Allowing Remote Access

Each user must have a password before you can allow remote access. Typically, all administrators of the computer will have access by default. To choose which users will have remote access:

1. Select 'Select Users.'

2. Choose your options for allowing connections from other computers.
